When it comes to my painting process, I like to work outside as much as possible. Being outside allows me to fully immerse myself in my surroundings, capturing the weather and atmosphere directly into my work. I love painting the view in front of me - it gives me a sense of freedom in my mark-making and turns the act of painting into a race to capture the scene before it changes again. I also enjoy the small details that come with painting outside, like the bits of sand that get mixed in with the paint, or the variation between thick and thin brushstrokes as I rush to capture the shifting light.
Of course, painting outside does have its limitations, especially when working on larger canvases as it becomes a bit tricky with transportation! This is why I often prefer to work in the studio for bigger pieces. During my outdoor sessions, I collect as much information as I can through sketches, small studies, and photographs to help me transfer that energy and detail onto a larger canvas back in the studio.
When I paint outside, I enjoy creating studies on smaller boards alongside my standard-sized paintings. These small studies help me stay quick and responsive to the ever-changing scenery, while also allowing me to keep my brushwork loose and connected to the moment.
My small studies are framed and available to purchase on my online shop.
